Approach to Learning

Learning for life in a caring environment

Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Happy children learn well, PSHE is an important and necessary part of children's education. It is taught weekly in all classes and is deeply imbedded in the culture of our school. We use the PiXL PSHE Primary Edge which incorporates online safety, character development and physical & mental health.

Reading

Children are encouraged to become confident, enthusiastic, critical and independent readers.  All children have a reading book that they will bring home on a daily basis for you to share and enjoy with them. They will have opportunities to read for information, interest and enjoyment. We achieve this through:

  • Daily 30 minute shared reading sessions in class
  • Come and Read Sessions
  • Providing access to ‘Fiction Express' which is an e-book account
  • All children have a reading log and are encouraged to read at home, with mufti rewards as an incentive
  • Dedicated story time, where children enjoy listening to a class book
  • Ensuring our school themes are underpinned by quality texts
  • Having volunteer readers in school through each term
  • Providing a full, exciting library
  • Buddy Reading Sessions
  • Library trips with our KS1 children
  • Celebrating World Book Day

Writing

Children are taught to be independent, enthusiastic and expressive writers, who are able to write in a meaningful way. We achieve this by:

  • Providing reasons for children to write based on firsthand, wow experiences that are linked to our themes
  • Providing opportunities to collaborate with others, using Talk for Writing
  • Using Read, Write Inc spelling scheme throughout KS2
  • Using drama to help generate ideas and to inspire
  • Running a weekly writing club for KS2 children
  • Ensuring children have the opportunity to write at length, edit and improve their work
  • Using a consistent handwriting scheme throughout school, called Kinetic Letters
  • Scaffolding writing with FANTASTICs – 9 reasons for writing

Maths

Our mathematics curriculum is taught daily using mastery techniques to enable understanding of mathematical concepts and developing critical thinking and reasoning, whilst building a knowledge of basic number skills.  We have worked with Enigma Maths Hub for the past 2 years, developing Maths Mastery Specialist Teachers in school. We also use The White Rose Mastery Curriculum, which is a resource that helps us to:

  • Encourage children to become self-regulatory learners; choosing Challenge, Super Challenge and Ocean Deep activities
  • Ensure lessons are well-structured and sequenced so that children are able to work towards mastery
  • Provide well-chosen and purposeful resources

Phonics

Read, Write, Inc is used to teach phonics throughout EYFS and KS1.

Together, we ensure that children become passionate readers with a real understanding about why they need to learn sounds.
